IELTS SPEAKING: WORK - PART 1 SAMPLE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Work is one of the most common topics in IELTS speaking part 1.
In this lesson, you will learn some key vocabulary for talking about work, listen to some native speaker answers, review IELTS speaking part 1 tips and prepare your own awesome answers using what you learned!
01 Key Vocabulary
- To pursue (v)– to do (something) over a period of time to achieve a goal.
- To be bored to death – to be extremely bored.
- Tough (adj) – difficult.
- People from all walks of life – people from different places/jobs.
- To get along with(someone)– to have a good relationship with someone.
- An Extrovert (n) – a person that enjoys meeting people and talking to people.
- Deadline (n)– a time by which something must be done.
- To be in the same boat – to be in the same situation (negative)
02 Listening - Fill in the blanks
Watch and listen to the video of our sample answers below. Use a notebook to take note of the answers. Then check your answers.
03 Practice
Now it's your turn, prepare your own answers using some of the vocabulary you learned today.
You should use the model answers to help you and you can 'steal' some phrases but you should not copy or try to memorize the answers.
Then, practice answering the below questions. It is a good idea to record your answers on your phone then listen to the answers and correct any mistakes you can hear.
Remember to get a high score you need to to the following.
- Answer the question by paraphrasing.
- Expand. (Why/when/how long)
- Use different tenses/structures.
- Include fluency markers
- Use some less common vocabulary.
- Include some phrasal verbs.
- Include some idioms if possible.
1. What is your job?
I’m a salesperson. I’m employed by a large company that creates and sells software. I’ve been working there for about 5 years so I have gained considerable experience in this role.
2. Why did you choose this job?
That’s a good question! I suppose, I decided to pursue a career in sales because it would give me the opportunity to meet people.
After graduating from university, I worked as an office administrator but, honestly, I was bored to death in that position. I’m an extrovert so being a salesperson is much more enjoyable.
3. What do you enjoy about your job?
Fortunately, In my position, I get to meet people from all walks of life and I get along with my colleagues. In addition, although my job is sometimes tough, I get great satisfaction from making sales.
