04 Practice

Now it's your turn, prepare your own answers using some of the vocabulary you learned today.

You should use the model answers to help you and you can 'steal' some phrases but you should not copy or try to memorize the answers.

Then, practice answering the below questions. It is a good idea to record your answers on your phone then listen to the answers and correct any mistakes you can hear.

1. What is the purpose of a long or short haircut?

I suppose, having short hair is practical and having longer hair is more stylish and fashion-forward.

I mean, a tight haircut requires less upkeep and is probably more economical as one can save money by foregoing expensive hair products such as shampoo or conditioner. Indeed, most militaries insist on soldiers having short haircuts for this reason. That said, nowadays it’s quite stylish to have a ‘buzz cut’.

On the other hand, long hair is typically associated with vanity and beauty. In most countries, long hair is considered normal for women. Although it takes more time and money to care for, it’s generally accepted that longer styles are more feminine and attractive.

2. How often do you cut your hair?

I tend to have my hair trimmed every three or four weeks.

I used to have longer hair but it’s pretty short at the moment so it’s important that I get it cut regularly. Otherwise it looks messy and unprofessional. I usually go to a small barber shop that’s close to my house. The barbers there are really talented, I’d trust them with my life!

3. Why do people like to dye their hair?

As I see it, there are two main reasons people choose to have their hair dyed.

First of all, everyone needs a change from time to time! I mean, people get bored of the same old colour. Actually, I’ve noticed that many young ladies have begun dying their hair bright colours like blue and pink. It’s a trend that seems to be catching on!

Secondly, elderly people, both men and women tend to dye their hair to avoid looking old. I guess grey isn’t a youthful colour.
